Statement

"Painting is an emotional response which brings forth a visual indicator of my soul's longing to merge with the immediacy of nature in the wilds, the less tamed places of city, in the color of sky and water, the movement of trees, and in the bearing of meadows and mountains.  Nature is my true teacher and never fails to give me subjects for my compositions.  In the process of painting, I use line, mass and color to reach unseen, unnamed places within me while also recording my observations of what is around me.  Many times I like to place a figure and/or a man made item like houses or boats in a painting, but these figures are always secondary in relation to the landscape.  They are there to add emotion for the viewer.  I work "en plein aire" when weather allows and, when in my studio, use sketches and photographs made in the field as a guide to continue my work."

"As an artist, I use color, texture, and composition to show emotion, whether painting traditional forms like landscapes or painting abstract shapes.  I begin with a solid ground then start adding color to elicit a feeling.  Line and mass begin to take shape in a push-pull with the color.  My underlying intention as an artist in this process is to reach for an expression of the unseen, unnamed places within me while also recording my observations of what is around me.  In the full process of working, I slip into an altered state where emotion rules.  Intellect comes in after taking a break when I view my work, see what works and what doesn't, and change things to suit the composition.  This process continues until I feel a resolution has been reached. "
